Topic:  Strengthening Your Leadership

Speaker:  Michael Useem, PhD

Professor of Management

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

Intensifying demands for high performance are pressing departments, practices, and medical centers to become more flexible and fast-acting. They are finding that such initiatives require effective leadership and a supportive culture, and this has become all the more critical in an uncertain environment. The challenge is to build leaders and well-led teams throughout your organization, and that requires a capacity to think strategically, communicate persuasively, and decide decisively. Drawing on challenging times and moments of decision, Michael Useem identifies what is required to strengthen leadership and build a team for the long-term, what will be essential for leadership in the future that is different from the past, and how a leader’s checklist can be used to foster leadership throughout the ranks.

Michael Useem is Professor of Management and Faculty Director of the Center for Leadership and McNulty Leadership Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His university teaching includes MBA and executive-MBA courses on management and leadership, and he offers programs on leadership and governance for managers and directors in the United States and abroad. He is author of The Leadership Moment, Investor Capitalism, and The Leader’s Checklist, and co-author of Go Long: Why Long-Term Thinking Is Your Best Short-Term Strategy.
